Now, about the funk\u2026<\/strong><\/p>\n

The tune I bring you today is a bit of instrumental genius from the early days of the mighty Ohio Players.<\/strong><\/p>\n

With a lineage that goes back to 1959 (when the group came together as the Ohio Untouchables<\/strong>), on into their mid-decade rebirth as the Ohio Players, after which they worked in New York as the house band for Compass Records (releasing two singles for the label in 1967 and 1968).<\/p>\n

They were working with producer Johnny Brantley\u2019s<\/strong> Vidalia productions when they hooked up (for one album) with Capitol Records.<\/p>\n

The tune I bring you today comes from that partnership.<\/p>\n

Interestingly, their recording from this period, for both Compass and Capitol had been recirculated on the exploit\/ripoff label Trip\/Upfront as the album \u2018First Impressions\u2019, which is where I first heard \u2018Find Someone To Love\u2019. Their Capitol LP, \u2018Observations In Time\u2019 isn\u2019t incredibly rare, or expensive (copies go for between 40 and 100 bucks) but it doesn\u2019t show up that often.<\/p>\n

The group\u2019s vocal material from this period has always reminded me of the Parliaments<\/strong> stuff from the mid-60s, with a slightly more raucous edge.<\/p>\n

\u2018Find Someone To Love\u2019 features Sugarfoot Bonner\u2019s<\/strong> wobbly, deeply funky guitar prominently, as well as hard hitting drums, droning organ and the band\u2019s horn section. It\u2019s a much deeper, grittier groove than the flashy, fonky<\/em> stuff they\u2019d hit the charts with a few years later.<\/p>\n

Not exactly the Love Rollercoaster, more like the funhouse on the way there.<\/p>\n

I dig it a lot, and I hope you do too.<\/p>\n
