Greetings all.<\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n

I was going to do a post about the late Ray Bryant <\/strong>today, but I\u2019m postponing it until next week (It\u2019ll be worth the wait).<\/p>\n

I know that it\u2019s all just a part of the vast randomness of the universe, but it always seems to me that these soul, funk and jazz cats fall in rapid succession, as if they were all sitting waiting for the bus to the great beyond and got on at the same time.<\/p>\n

The really sad thing is that what we are ultimately dealing with is the natural movement of the classic generation of soul and funk performers (precious few of the earlier generation of jazz and R&B performers are still with us) into their later years.<\/p>\n

That said, we\u2019ll just keep on keeping on, paying tribute to the known and the unknown so that the sounds they made are not forgotten.<\/p>\n

I should also remind you that the Funky16Corners Radio Show<\/strong> returns to the airwaves of the interwebs this Friday night at 9PM on Viva Radio<\/strong><\/a>. It’s the perfect soundtrack for your summer, with all kinds of groovy funk, soul, jazz and rare groove with which to enjoy the icy cocktail of your choosing.<\/p>\n

The tune I bring you today is some solid, ass-kicking funk from an artist whose songs are (sadly) better known than he is.<\/p>\n

I first heard Don Covay\u2019s <\/strong>version of \u2018Money\u2019 a few years back while spinning alongside M-Fasis<\/strong> and DJ Bluewater<\/strong> at the late, lamented Master Groove <\/strong>in NYC. As soon as the needle hit the record my ears perked up and started vibrating and I was all \u2018What the hell is that?\u201d<\/em> followed immediately with \u201cWhere Can I Get Me One?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

It was a long time before I finally found a copy, and as is often the case, because I was patient the gods of vinyl brought me my very own copy for the cost of one crumpled, green dollar.<\/p>\n

Now if the only thing Don Covay ever did in his life and career was to write and record \u2018Sookie Sookie\u2019 – one of the ur documents of funk and soul, a record so mighty as to be imprinted in the DNA of any human to ever dirty their fingers pawing through vinyl or stomp upon a soulful dance floor – he\u2019d deserve eternal fame, but he\u2019s also the dude that laid down \u2018Mercy Mercy\u2019, \u2018See Saw\u2019 and \u2018Chain of Fools\u2019 sang with the Soul Clan<\/strong> and much much more.<\/p>\n

This record, the one right here, this is the shit.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The opening alone, in which Don appears to have a snootful of rocket sauce and manages to momentarily out-James Brown<\/strong> the Godfather, is a mindbender, but then he and his band set themselves on fire and it\u2019s almost a full minute before you realize that this funky tornado is in fact a cover of the old Barrett Strong<\/strong> chestnut.<\/p>\n

Like the young George Foreman<\/strong>, this record is heavy, yet also fast and dangerous and ought to have a place in the traveling record box of anyone who brings the funk to the people.<\/p>\n

Dig it you must.<\/em><\/p>\n
