{"id":2266,"date":"2012-02-05T13:23:15","date_gmt":"2012-02-05T18:23:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/funky16corners.lunarpages.net\/?p=2266"},"modified":"2012-02-21T14:35:05","modified_gmt":"2012-02-21T19:35:05","slug":"jesse-gresham-plus-three-bust-out","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/funky16corners.com\/?p=2266","title":{"rendered":"Jesse Gresham Plus Three &#8211; Bust Out"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong> <\/strong><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/funky16corners.com\/pictures\/jessegresham_plusthree_45.jpg\" alt=\"Example\" width=\"600\" height=\"613\" \/><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><del><strong><strong><strong><em>Listen\/Download -Jesse Gresham Plus Three &#8211; Bust Out<\/em><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/del><\/p>\n<p><strong><strong><strong>Greetings all.<\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Welcome to another week here at the<strong> Corners.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The tune I bring you today is something I\u2019ve had warming up my crates for many years, that I knew almost nothing about.<\/p>\n<p>I picked up my first <strong>Jesse Gresham Plus Three<\/strong> 45, \u2018Shootin\u2019 the Grease\u2019 way back in the way back, and dug it for its organ groove grease, but also because it was on a strange label (Head) with a <strong>Robert Parker<\/strong> hit (\u2018Barefootin\u2019) inexplicably placed on its flip side.<\/p>\n<p>A few years after that score, I happened upon today\u2019s selection, \u2018Bust Out\u2019 and then later heard (<em>but have yet to score a copy of<\/em>) \u2018The Penguin\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Bust Out\u2019 has always tickled my fancy because, in the late period <strong>Merl Saunders\/Toussaint McCall<\/strong> <em>stylee,<\/em>\u00a0 it features the keyboard player doing double duty on the organ and the electric piano.<\/p>\n<p>I had been unable to find any information about Gresham, until I recently set to Googling and happened upon a page on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.msbluestrail.org\/_webapp_4099751\/Staple_Singers\" target=\"_blank\">Mississippi Blues Trail site<\/a>, where in an article about the <strong>Staple Singers<\/strong>, they happened to mention several other musicians who worked out of the Drew, Mississippi area, one of whom was <strong>Jesse Gresham.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The site mentioned that Gresham was a keyboard player, who also worked as a school teacher and who had become a minister.<\/p>\n<p>I adjusted my search criteria,<a href=\"https:\/\/homeofthegroove.blogspot.com\/2011\/09\/several-good-excuses-for-lack-of-new.html\" target=\"_blank\"> and found a comment on the mighty<strong> Home of the Groove<\/strong> blog<\/a> from the researcher who had written the Blues Trail page, who fleshed out the Jesse Gresham Plus Three story somewhat.<\/p>\n<p>Apparently Gresham and his band worked out of the Clarksdale, MS area and recorded their one session in Memphis, TN. The group featured Gresham on keys, <strong>Johnny Agnew<\/strong> on guitar, <strong>Larry Haggans<\/strong> on bass and <strong>Nathaniel Jefferson<\/strong> on drums (Agnew and Haggans get writing credit on this cut).<\/p>\n<p>That the group\u2019s entire output was limited to a single session isn\u2019t surprising, since all that appears to exist is the two sides of today\u2019s 45, plus two different edits of the song that appeared first as \u2018Shootin\u2019 the Grease\u2019 and later as \u2018The Penguin Pts 1&amp;2\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>All told, for a three-song run, they were pretty much batting .1000.<\/p>\n<p>I hope you dig the sounds, and I\u2019ll be back on Wednesday with something cool.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><strong><strong>Peace<\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><strong><strong>Larry<\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><strong><strong> <\/strong><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/helium.lunarpages.com\/%7Efunky4\/pictures\/new_funky16_logo.jpg\" alt=\"Example\" width=\"179\" height=\"181\" \/><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Also, make sure that you check out the POAC link below (click on the logo).
