{"id":2570,"date":"2012-03-06T14:29:23","date_gmt":"2012-03-06T19:29:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/funky16corners.com\/?p=2570"},"modified":"2012-03-20T09:57:32","modified_gmt":"2012-03-20T14:57:32","slug":"osibisa-ayiko-bia","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/funky16corners.com\/?p=2570","title":{"rendered":"Osibisa &#8211; Ayiko Bia"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong> <\/strong><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/funky16corners.com\/pictures\/osibisa_pic.jpg\" alt=\"Example\" width=\"600\" height=\"469\" \/><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Osibisa<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong> <\/strong><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/funky16corners.com\/pictures\/osibisa_lp.jpg\" alt=\"Example\" width=\"600\" height=\"599\" \/><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><del><strong><strong><strong><em>Listen\/Download &#8211; Osibisa &#8211; Ayiko Bia <\/em><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/del><\/p>\n<p><strong><strong><strong>Greetings all.<\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Welcome to another <em>spectacular<\/em> week in the world of vinyl.<\/p>\n<p>The middle of the week is here, and like <strong>Simtec and Wylie<\/strong>, I\u2019m just trying to get over the hump.<\/p>\n<p>The tune I bring you today is something I featured a while back on the <strong>Funky16Corners Radio Show.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Osibisa<\/strong> is a band that I knew of (mainly via their albums covers, illustrated by <strong>Roger Dean*<\/strong>) long before I ever heard a note of their music.<\/p>\n<p>When I finally came across their first album (the self-titled \u2018Osibisa\u2019 from 1971) I was already well into my funky years, so I grabbed it and took it home.<\/p>\n<p>While I wouldn\u2019t describe Osibisa as a purely funk band, they were undeniably funky.<\/p>\n<p>Formed by Ghanian sax player <strong>Teddy Osei<\/strong> (who with several other members of the band had roots in the highlife band the <strong>Star Gazers<\/strong>, going back to the 1950s) in London in the later 60s, Osibisa featured members from Ghana, Nigeria, Antigua, Grenada and Trinidad.<\/p>\n<p>They were a great example of the wide variety of sounds being blended by musicians who came to the UK from British colonies all around the world (see also,<strong> Cymande<\/strong> and countless reggae artists).<\/p>\n<p>Osibisa blended African highlife, rock, jazz, soul and funk together to create a sound all their own.<\/p>\n<p>The tune I bring you today, \u2018Ayiko Bia\u2019 brings together the native sounds of all the band\u2019s members, sounding at times like Carribbean carnival transported to the streets of Africa (with a little US funk thrown into the stew for flavor).<\/p>\n<p>Bassist <strong>Spartacus R<\/strong> deserves special mention.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=yRy1CXWaipM\" target=\"_blank\">\u2018Ayiko Bia\u2019 was later sampled by the <strong>Jungle Brothers<\/strong> for their track \u2018Good Newz Comin\u2019.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>It is a very groovy tune indeed, and I hope you dig it.<\/p>\n<p>Have a great weekend, and I\u2019ll see you all on Friday.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><strong><strong>Peace<\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><strong><strong>Larry<\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><strong><strong> <\/strong><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/helium.lunarpages.com\/%7Efunky4\/pictures\/new_funky16_logo.jpg\" alt=\"Example\" width=\"179\" height=\"181\" \/><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>*If you were a stoner, or an art student in the 70s (I got to be both!)
