Greetings all.<\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n

The end of another week is upon us, and it behooves me to remind you that the Funky16Corners Radio Show<\/strong> takes to the airwaves of the interwebs this and very Friday night at 9PM on Viva Radio<\/strong><\/a>, followed the next day, posted in MP3 form right here at the blog.<\/p>\n

The tune I bring you today may (should<\/em>) sound familiar.<\/p>\n

A few years back I posted Earnest Jackson\u2019s<\/strong> 1974 45 \u2018Funky Black Man\u2019.<\/a><\/p>\n

It was in that post that I mentioned that the song had been remade a few years later as \u2018Funky DJ\u2019 by a group calling themselves Fried Chicken<\/strong> (who were in fact a pseudonymous Bubbha Thomas and the Lightmen<\/strong>).<\/p>\n

Both records were used by DJ Shadow<\/strong> and Cut Chemist<\/strong> in their landmark mixes, \u2018Funky Black Man\u2019 in \u2018Product Placement\u2019 and \u2018Funky DJ\u2019 in ‘Brainfreeze’.<\/p>\n

Drummer Bubbha Thomas and the Lightmen (also billed as the Lightmen Plus One) hailed from Houston, TX.<\/p>\n

Thomas had studied under Conrad Johnson<\/strong> (later director of the legendary Kashmere Stage Band<\/strong>) and with the Lightmen released two albums \u2018Energy Control Center\u2019 in 1972 (the track \u2018The Phantom\u2019 was included on the Stones Throw \u2018Funky 16 Corners\u2019 compilation) <\/a>and \u2018Country Fried Chicken\u2019.<\/p>\n

I\u2019m not sure how Thomas and his band came to cover Jackson\u2019s record, but the results were certainly interesting (especially to anyone interested in sampling the phrase \u2018funky dj\u2019).<\/p>\n

It was also co-produced by 60s pop star John Fred!<\/strong><\/p>\n

I stand by my initial appraisal, in which I stated that Jackson\u2019s vocals are superior, but both records are certainly cool and worth hearing.<\/p>\n

I hope you dig it and I\u2019ll be back on Monday with something groovy.<\/p>\n
