The end of another week is here, and so is your weekly helping of soulful goodness in the form of the Funky16Corners Radio Show<\/strong>. We take to the airwaves of the interwebs this \u2013 and every \u2013 Friday night at 9PM on Viva Radio<\/strong><\/a>. If you can\u2019t be there at the time of broadcast you can always fall by the blog and grab the show (or any of the previous 100 episodes) in MP3 form.<\/p>\n

Also, make sure you fall by on Monday when the 2012 Funky16Corners Pledge Drive\/Allnighter<\/strong> hits. You\u2019ll get eight new, excellent mixes from some of the finest selectors I know. You won\u2019t want to miss it.<\/p>\n

The tune I bring you today is something cool from the rock side of the tracks.<\/p>\n

I don\u2019t doubt that many among you are aware of the work of Mr Lonnie Mack<\/strong>, but I don\u2019t think you imagined him doing something quite this funky.<\/p>\n

Mack is know to most for his 1963 hits \u2018Memphis\u2019 which managed to make it into the Top 5 on the R&B and Pop charts and \u2018Wham\u2019 (which grazed the Pop Top 20).<\/p>\n

He recorded a wide variety of blues and R&B-based covers and originals (influencing countless young guitarists), recording for Fraternity from 1963 to 1967.<\/p>\n

Mack was also an excellent soulful vocalist, as seen in tracks like \u2018Where There\u2019s a Will There\u2019s a Way\u2019 and \u2018Why\u2019.<\/p>\n

His career slowed somewhat after his early hits and he spent a lot of the 60s as a session guitarist, working on session for King\/Federal artists like Freddy King<\/strong> and James Brown\u00a0<\/strong>and singers like Joe Simon.<\/strong><\/p>\n

When Mack signed with Elektra records in 1968 he had been largely absent from the charts for a few years. He recorded three albums for the label over the next few years, and Elektra also reissued his early Fraternity hits on the \u2018For Collectors Only\u2019 comp.<\/p>\n

The track I bring you today, the funky \u2018Too Much Trouble\u2019 appeared on his 1969 Elektra debut \u2018Glad I\u2019m In the Band\u2019.<\/p>\n

\u2018Too Much Trouble\u2019 is one of those late-60s tracks that seems to have emerged from the same musical swamp as efforts by cats like Joe South<\/strong> and Tony Joe White<\/strong>, musicians who wove together elements of rock, soul, country and blues into something new and groovy.<\/p>\n

Mack\u2019s vocals are a little rougher\/wilder than his early sides, but his guitar wails and the backing band (organ, bass and drums) are spot on.<\/p>\n

The track was co-written by Mack\u2019s bass player Tim Drummond<\/strong>, who had played in James Brown\u2019s band.<\/p>\n

If you can find the album grab it as is features an excellent cover of Ted Taylor\u2019s \u2018<\/strong>Stay Away From My Baby\u2019 and remakes of Mack\u2019s own \u2018Why\u2019 and a new version of \u2018Memphis\u2019.<\/p>\n

Interestingly, during his time at Elektra, mack continued to work as a session player, playing guitar and bass on the Doors<\/strong> \u2018Morrison Hotel\u2019 LP (he is rumored to have played lead guitar on \u2018Roadhouse Blues\u2019) and producing Dorothy Combs Morrison\u2019s<\/strong><\/a> sides for the label.<\/p>\n

Mack spent most of the 70s recording in a country style, moving back to blues and R&B by the 80s.<\/p>\n

He\u2019s still playing today.<\/p>\n
