The end of another week is here, and so is your weekly helping of soulful goodness in the form of the Funky16Corners Radio Show<\/strong>. We take to the airwaves of the interwebs this \u2013 and every \u2013 Friday night at 9PM on Viva Radio<\/strong><\/a>. If you can\u2019t be there at the time of broadcast you can always fall by the blog and grab the show (or any of the previous 100 episodes) in MP3 form.<\/p>\n

I\u2019ll start by assuming that as fans of soul, most of you will already be aware of the undeniable awesomeness of Derek Martin\u2019s<\/strong> \u2018Daddy Rolling Stone\u2019, one of the ur documents of the mod soul sound and a dynamite record on its own merits.<\/p>\n

Derek Martin was himself a fantastic example of the kind of journeyman soul artist that made the 60s great.<\/p>\n

He got his start in the R&B era, recording with the Sheiks<\/strong> and the Pearls<\/strong> (both groups also featured Dave Clowney<\/strong>, aka Dave \u2018Baby Cortez\u2019), then the Top Notes<\/strong> and Jimmy Ricks and the Raves<\/strong> (with whom he first recorded \u2018Daddy Rolling Stone\u2019 for Atco in 1962).<\/p>\n

He recorded his own version of Otis Blackwell\u2019s<\/strong> \u2018Daddy Rolling Stone\u2019 for Crackerjack in 1963, and then spent the rest of the 60s and the early 70s bouncing from label to label, recording for Festival, Roulette, Tuba, Volt, Buttercup, Vibration and All Platinum.<\/p>\n

Today\u2019s selection, \u2018Soul Power\u2019 was recorded and first released for the Detroit label Tuba in 1967, and later issued on Volt.<\/p>\n

The tune, written and produced by Teddy Randazzo<\/strong>, is a funky number that quotes the Parliaments<\/strong> \u2018Testify\u2019 in the lead-up to the chorus.<\/p>\n

Like pretty much everything else he did (with the exception of 1965\u2019s \u2018You Better Go\u2019 which grazed the R&B Top 20) the excellent \u2018Soul Power\u2019 did not make a dent on the charts.<\/p>\n

I\u2019d be very interested in seeing someone put together a multi-label retrospective of Martin\u2019s 60s and 70s singles. What I\u2019ve heard shows not only a lot of talent, but also somewhat adventurous tastes.<\/p>\n

Though it\u2019s discography was relatively brief \u2013 less than 20 singles in its catalog \u2013 Tuba was a very interesting label, releasing soul, funk (Richard\u2019s People\u2019s<\/strong> mighty \u2018Yo Yo\u2019) and garage pop (the Cartoons<\/strong> and Friday Night and Saturday)<\/strong>, gospel (Clara Ward<\/strong>) and soul jazz (Johnny Lytle<\/strong>).<\/p>\n
