The week is coming to a close so I\u2019ll remind you that the Funky16Corners Radio Show<\/strong> will be hitting the airwaves of the interwebs Friday night at 9PM on Viva Radio.<\/strong><\/a> The following day you can pick up an MP3 of the show via iTunes<\/strong> or over at the Funky16Corners Blog.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The tunes I bring you today are prime examples of the finest sounds being made during the apex of the \u2018Blaxploitation\u2019 era.<\/p>\n

A few years back I was down digging\/spinning at the DC record show and was lucky enough to have an exceptionally good day in the stacks, walking away with several long-time wants on 45 and LP, among them, the soundtrack to the 1973 film (one of the finest of the genre) \u2018The Mack\u2019.<\/p>\n

The flick starred Max Julien<\/strong> and Richard Pryor<\/strong>, and had the great good fortune of having its soundtrack composed by the mighty Willie Hutch.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Born in LA but raised in Texas, Willie Hutch (born William McKinley Hutchinson<\/strong>) returned to the West Coast in the mid-60s, eventually finding work as an writer\/producer\/arranger for the 5th Dimension.<\/strong><\/p>\n

He was later called in to write lyrics for the song that would become \u2018I\u2019ll Be There\u2019 and after the song became a hit for the Jackson Five,<\/strong> Hutch went to work for Motown.<\/p>\n

While at the label he recorded several albums under his own name, as well as the soundtracks for \u2018The Mack\u2019 and \u2018Foxy Brown\u2019.<\/p>\n

The two tunes I bring you today both hail from the soundtrack to \u2018The Mack\u2019.<\/p>\n

The first is the 45 edit\/hit version (R&B Top 20 in 1973) of \u2018Brother\u2019s Gonna Work It Out\u2019. A great feature for Hutch as both vocalist and guitarist, it\u2019s also hard not to compare it to Curtis Mayfield\u2019s<\/strong> award winning work on the \u2018Superfly\u2019 soundtrack from the previous year.
\nWhile Hutch\u2019s production is more dense and hard-hitting than Mayfield\u2019s, \u2018Brother\u2019s Gonna Work It Out\u2019 has that Curtis vibe to it.<\/p>\n

That said, it is a dynamite track, with classy strings (and harp!), wah wah guitar and a great falsetto vocal by Hutch.<\/p>\n

The second cut, \u2018Vampin\u2019 (from the soundtrack album) is a change of pace, almost more of a musical interlude than a proper song, but a groovy one indeed. The horns almost have a touch of Norman Whitfield<\/strong> to them, and Hutch lays down some exceptional guitar lines throughout.<\/p>\n

As I said, Hutch went on to record several albums for Motown, leaving Motown in 1977 to work with Norman Whitfield, then returning to the label in 1982. He eventually left the label and returned to Texas in the 1990s.<\/p>\n
