Welcome to the mid-point of another week.<\/p>\n

I figured that as long as we spent some time on Monday with a Northern Soul classic from the City of Brotherly Love, that we ought to do it again today.<\/p>\n

I have gone on the record many times in the past about my admiration for the talents of the mighty Eddie Holman.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Though Holman is best known for his huge 1969 hit \u2018Hey There Lonely Girl\u2019, when you sit down and rap with soulies about the man the story becomes a lot longer and more interesting.<\/p>\n

Holman recorded a grip of absolutely wonderful 45s before he signed with ABC at the end of the 60s, including Northern Soul classics like \u2018Eddie\u2019s My Name\u2019 and \u2018Stay Mine for Heaven\u2019s Sake\u2019 as well as epic ballads like \u2018I Cry 1,000 Tears\u2019 for labels like Cameo\/Parkway and Bell, many under the aegis of the House of Harthon.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Holman was possessed of one of the most amazing voices of the classic soul era, as comfortable in a soaring tenor as he was in his more famous falsetto.<\/p>\n

The song I bring you today comes from early in his ABC period, appearing on the b-side of his first 45 for that label in 1969.<\/p>\n

\u2018I Surrender\u2019 is unusual \u2013 at least for Holman\u2019s tenure at ABC \u2013 in that it was an upbeat dancer in an otherwise ballad-heavy catalog.<\/p>\n

Delivered (mostly) in Holman\u2019s falsetto, the song has a stylish, horn and string-laden arrangement.<\/p>\n

The song never charted in the US or the UK, but over the years it became a favorite on Northern Soul dance floors, so much so that the 45 is one of the more expensive discs he ever did, second only to \u2018Eddie\u2019s My Name\u2019.<\/p>\n

\u2018I Surrender\u2019 was also issued in the UK on the Action label.<\/p>\n
