Drunk<\/em><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/del><\/p>\n<p><strong><strong><strong>Greetings all<\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Welcome to another week here at the<strong> Corners.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I do not recall where I first heard today\u2019s selection, but I do remember my surprise when I heard it.<\/p>\n<p>The name <strong>Ace Cannon<\/strong> was already a very familiar one.<\/p>\n<p>Cannon had a string of saxophone instrumental hits beginning in 1961 with \u2018Tuff\u2019 (#3 R&amp;B #17 Pop) and continuing through the 60s and 70s. he recorded more than three dozen singles and several albums for the Hi label.<\/p>\n<p>Though his best known numbers were in a blues\/R&amp;B vein, he recorded a wide variety of pop material through his career, but as far as I can tell, nothing else like \u2018Drunk\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>Released as a single in 1971 (it also appeared on the \u2018Blowing Wild\u2019 LP that same year) \u2018Drunk\u2019 is an outlier in the Cannon oeuvre.<\/p>\n<p>I would not hesitate for a second to classify \u2018Drunk\u2019 as funk, with the drums, bass, the chanky guitar and the organ, and of course Ace, \u201csinging\u201d the song and chanting the title over and over again.<\/p>\n<p>A cover (and radical reworking) of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=eiPAOT9QFR8\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Jimmy Liggins<\/strong> 1953 jump blues tune<\/a>, \u2018Drunk\u2019 is the kind of record that ought to be better known, not only as an anomaly in the catalog of an otherwise well known performer, but also as a solid funk outing.<\/p>\n<p>I have no idea who\u2019s backing Ace on this one, but I wouldn\u2019t be at all surprised if some of the <strong>Hodges<\/strong> brothers were in the house.<\/p>\n<p>That said, as far as I can tell, \u2018Drunk\u2019 made no impact whatsoever (I can\u2019t find any evidence of Cannon charting after the mid-60s).<\/p>\n<p>I hope you dig the tune, and maybe find one for your own record box.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Keep the faith<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><strong><strong>Larry<\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><strong><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Example\" src=\"https:\/\/helium.lunarpages.com\/%7Efunky4\/pictures\/new_funky16_logo.jpg\" width=\"179\" height=\"181\" \/><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><br \/>\n___________________________________________________________________________________________<\/p>\n<p><strong>Also, the brand new Funky16Corners &#8216;Keep Calm and Stay Funky&#8217;
