My acquisition of the Spellbinders<\/strong> \u2018Help Me (Get Myself Back Together Again)\u2019 is yet another one of those twisted tales that winds its way back to the big mountain of 45s that came into my life lo these many years ago.<\/p>\n

I\u2019ve gone on about it many times, so I\u2019ll keep it short. My father-in-law, while out scouting for antiques happened upon a huge stash of 45s, called and asked if I wanted them (naturally I said yes) and then brought them down to our house.<\/p>\n

When they got here I was stunned by the sheer quantity (several thousand), and my wife and I spent the better part of a summer going through them, pulling out the stuff I knew was good, culling the stuff I knew was bad, and trying to figure out the difference on everything else.<\/p>\n

Thanks to the huge amount of records, this proved to be an inexact science, and in addition to several boxes of the good stuff, I ended up with a couple of hundred things that at least looked interesting (or too interesting to throw out) and I\u2019ve been picking at those ever since.<\/p>\n

Every once in a while, when I have a little time on my hands I head back into those boxes, and recently such a trip resulted in one of the great \u2018how the hell did I miss this?<\/em>\u2019 moments.<\/p>\n

I must have given the Spellbinders 45 a spin at some point (since I had it filed as \u2018soul\u2019) but I suspect that I only listened to the other side (‘Danny Boy’), since it did not make a significant impression on me, which, had I listened to today\u2019s selection, would not have been the case (am I making any sense here?<\/em>).<\/p>\n

That said, when I did drop the needle on \u2018Help Me (Get Myself back Together Again)\u2019 I was immediately drawn in by the wonderful intro, with the bass, vibes and percussion, followed immediately by the drums bringing in the pounding four on the floor beat. The rest of the record is pure Northern Soul genius, combining a great song, stellar arrangement and production (by Van McCoy<\/strong>) and fantastic vocals by the group.<\/p>\n

What little I\u2019ve been able to find out about the Spellbinders is that they were only together for a few years, recording a handful of 45s and an LP for Columbia (and one 45 for Date), with \u2018Help Me\u2026\u2019 being issued as a non-LP 45 in 1966.<\/p>\n

The group also had New Jersey roots, which is always a cool thing (for me) to find out.<\/p>\n

I\u2019m just thankful now that this 45 didn\u2019t languish for another few years, or get sucked back into the vinyl maelstrom forever.<\/p>\n
