Now,I hope that those of you old enough to remember who Steve Allen<\/strong> was are still here. Any familiarity with the late funnyman might have been enough to scare you away, but I assure that once you pull down the ones and zeros, you\u2019ll be happy you stayed.<\/p>\n

Steve Allen was a funny dude, in many ways the precursor to guys like David Letterman.<\/strong><\/p>\n

He was also an accomplished songwriter and musician.<\/p>\n

Along with arranger Oliver Nelson<\/strong> (who can probably be credited with any musical power herein), Allen recorded three volumes of \u2018Soulful Brass\u2019 LPs for Bob Theile\u2019s<\/strong> Flying Dutchman label, with the initial volume being the first LP released by the label.<\/p>\n

I sought out \u2018Soulful Brass Volume 2\u2019 because I\u2019d heard that it contained a groovy version of \u2018California Soul\u2019 (which it did) but was also very pleased to see that it also included covers of \u2018Soulful Strut\u2019 and today\u2019s selection, \u2018Son of a Preacher Man\u2019.<\/p>\n

Allen\u2019s main contribution to the efforts here seem to be a combination of (mostly) name recognition and the occasional electric piano solo.<\/p>\n

\u2018Son of a Preacher Man\u2019 is an excellent, funky, brass-driven take on the Dusty Springfield<\/strong> hit, with hard-hitting drums by Jim Gordon,<\/strong> funky bass by Max Bennett<\/strong> and guitar by David Cohen.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The brass arrangements by Nelson are \u2013 of course \u2013 top notch.<\/p>\n

The combined results make this the only Steve Allen record you ever need to buy.<\/p>\n
