I have many of your old favorites lined up, as well as some very cool new names bringing mixes to the table. I also have a cool premium on the way for folks that donate this year. Keep your eyes and ears peeled for news!<\/p>\n

The tune I bring you today is a very groovy, very gritty slab of Florida funk.<\/p>\n

Originally released in the US (on the Normar label) as by Bobby Williams and the Mar Kings,<\/strong> what you see before you is the contemporaneous (within a couple of years) release on the UK Contempo-Raries imprint (with the name truncated).<\/p>\n

This is the Florida-based Bobby Williams<\/strong> (as in \u2018Funky Superfly\u2019) as opposed to the New Orleans-based Bobby Williams<\/strong> (as in \u2018Boogaloo Mardi Gras\u2019).<\/p>\n

This Bobby Williams laid down a series of excellent 45s through the years for labels like Lu-Pine, Sure Shot, Duplex and R&R, ranging from storming Northern Soul (\u2018I\u2019ve Only Got Myself To Blame\u2019), blazing funk (\u2018Funky Superfly\u2019 and today\u2019s selection) to smooth, late night soul (\u2018You Need Love Like I Do\u2019).<\/p>\n

His funky stuff \u2013 like most of the ish from the early 70s \u2013 is heavily influenced by the mighty Godfather of Soul<\/strong> (Williams\u2019 \u2018Let\u2019s Work A While\u2019 is a barely disguised reworking of \u2018Give It Up Or Turn It A Loose\u2019), and \u2018Let\u2019s Jam\u2019 is no exception.<\/p>\n

Though the overall sound isn\u2019t too James Brown-y<\/em><\/strong> (especially the instrumental side of things) Bobby\u2019s vocal, and the call and response action (including a tip of the hat to Isaac Hayes<\/strong>) definitely owes a debt to JB.<\/p>\n

The bass guitar (BIIIIG BASS!) , wah wah guitar and horns whip up a mighty racket, and Bobby is working very, very hard.<\/p>\n

This is one I think you\u2019re gonna want to spin a bunch of times, until you have gotten all the way (not half way<\/em>) down.<\/p>\n
