Welcome to yet another week in the ongoing saga of wax (and wane).<\/p>\n

The record I bring you today is something that has been simmering in my New Orleans crates for years, waiting for just the right opportunity to reveal its charms.<\/p>\n

Back in the day, when my collection wasn\u2019t quite as healthy as it is now I often cast my dragnet wide, seeing what I might dredge up by focusing on entire labels, cities etc.<\/p>\n

As my record room can attest today, this method was especially fruitful in regard to both Philadelphia and the great city of New Orleans.<\/p>\n

I had already gotten my hands on Eddie Bo\u2019s<\/strong> \u2018Hook and Sling\u2019 and kept my eyes peeled for anything else that might turn up on the Scram label, named for its owner, seafood entrepreneur Al Scramuzza.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Over the years, I managed to find the good (Sonny Jones<\/strong> \u2018Sissy Walk\u2019) and the not so good (Ray Brackens<\/strong> \u2018Do the Crawfish\u2019), but the Phinxs<\/strong> \u2018Street Jam\u2019 was one of the most perplexing.<\/p>\n

Basically a keyboard driven (piano and organ) R&B instro, with some horns, \u2018Street Jam\u2019 seems less like a stab at the charts than a representation of a tried and true stage jam committed to vinyl.<\/p>\n

I have never been able to discover anything about the Phinxs (I\u2019m assuming that the name was pronounced like \u2018Finks\u2019), other than the fact that \u2018Street Jam\u2019 was released in 1965 (only the second 45 on Scram) and the the band went on later that year to back singer Richie Matta<\/strong> on his 45 for the label.<\/p>\n
