Greetings all<\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n

The tune I bring you today is something very cool I picked up at a garage sale a few years back.<\/p>\n

I have no idea why I haven\u2019t featured it here before, other than it got lost in the shuffle.<\/p>\n

\u2018Sweet Soul Sister\u2019, co-written by Quincy Jones<\/strong> and performed by Nate Turner and the Mirettes<\/strong> appeared (as did its b-side \u2018Rap Run It On Down) on the soundtrack to a 1969 Sidney Poitier<\/strong> movie called \u2018The Lost Man\u2019.<\/p>\n

I haven\u2019t been able to track down any information about Nate Turner<\/strong> (I\u2019m pretty sure it\u2019s not the Chicago-based blues musician) but the Mirettes are in fact THE Mirettes, featuring Vanetta Fields<\/strong> on lead vocals, who recorded a number of excellent records for labels like Mirwood, Revue and Uni. I\u2019ve featured their epic reading of \u2018Take Me For a Little While\u2019 here at Funky16Corners a few years ago.<\/p>\n

The Mirettes \u2013 all former Ikettes<\/strong> (it seems like every other female soul singer of a certain vintage did some time with Ike and Tina<\/strong>) \u2013 had a Top 20 R&B hit with their version of \u2018In the Midnight Hour\u2019, just skimming the outer reaches of the Pop Top 40, in 1968.<\/p>\n

\u2018Sweet Soul Sister\u2019 is a slow, sexy groove, with Turner taking the lead vocal and the Mirettes working the background.<\/p>\n

The song features a cool, repeated guitar riff, subtle organ and horns. It was arranged and produced by \u00a0Jones.<\/p>\n

I have yet to track down and watch \u2018The Lost Man\u2019, but if any of you have seen it, and remember how the songs feature in the film, leave me a note in the comments.<\/p>\n
