Greetings all<\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n

The track I bring you today is proof that every once in a while you need to hit the LP racks as well as digging through the 45s.<\/p>\n

I grabbed Ronnie Dyson\u2019s<\/strong> debut LP \u2018(If You Let Me Make Love To You Then) Why Can\u2019t I Touch You\u2019 because I\u2019d never seen it before, I dug the title cut (a hit in 1970) and because it had some interesting looking covers in the track listing.<\/p>\n

When I got it home and set to digimatizing I was pleasantly surprised indeed, especially by today\u2019s selection, Dyson\u2019s cover of Little Willie John\u2019s<\/strong>* \u2018Fever\u2019.<\/p>\n

Dyson, who got his start as the lead in the original company of \u2018HAIR\u2019 in 1968 (and also appeared in Putney Swope) first sang \u2018(If You Let Me Make Love To You Then) Why Can\u2019t I Touch You\u2019 in an off-Broadway show called \u2018Salvation\u2019.<\/p>\n

He was signed to Columbia records, making it into the R&B Top 10 (and #13 Pop) in July of 1970.<\/p>\n

The album of the same name features covers of Freda Payne\u2019s<\/strong> \u2018Band of Gold\u2019 and Bread\u2019s<\/strong> \u2018Make it With You\u2019, which, while not as epic as Ralfi Pagan\u2019s<\/strong> version, is still pretty cool.<\/p>\n

I especially like Dyson\u2019s version of \u2018Fever\u2019 because it has a hard driving, Northern Soul feel to it.<\/p>\n

As it turns out, the cut has a minor following with the soulies, and would probably be a lot bigger if it were available on 45.<\/p>\n

Dyson had a string of R&B hits between 1970 and 1983, including his biggest hit, \u2018The More You Do It (The More I Like It Done To Me)\u2019 \u2013 he sure loved those parenthetical titles<\/em> \u2013 in 1976.<\/p>\n

Tragically, he was only 40 when he died of heart failure in 1990.<\/p>\n
