Greetings all<\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n

Hows about something for the middle of the week that is, to borrow a phrase from the mighty Emperor of Vout, Slim Gaillard<\/strong>, is mellow as a cello<\/em>?<\/p>\n

The Astors<\/strong> were a Memphis-based group that recorded several 45s for Stax between 1961 and 1967.<\/p>\n

Formed as the Chips<\/strong>, the group included Curtis Johnson, Eliehue Stanback, Sam Jones, Richard Harris,<\/strong> and Richard Griffin.<\/strong> That line-up recorded one single for Stax as the Chips.<\/p>\n

After Griffin left the group, they changed their name to the Astors.<\/p>\n

\u2018Candy\u2019 \u2013 which borrows part of its melody from Ferde Grofe\u2019s<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2018On the Trail\u2019 from his ‘Grand Canyon Suite’ <\/a>\u2013 was the group\u2019s only hit, almost making it into the R&B Top 10 in the summer of 1965.<\/p>\n

Written by Steve Cropper<\/strong> and Isaac Hayes<\/strong>, and featuring sweet group harmonies and a hard-hitting Stax rhythm section (listen to those drums) \u2018Candy\u2019 has enough pop for the radio and more than enough heat for the dancers.<\/p>\n

The flip side, \u2018I Found Out\u2019 is also very cool.<\/p>\n
