It\u2019s almost Friday, so might I urge you once again to tune in to the Funky16Corners Radio Show<\/strong>, which takes to the airwaves of the interwebs this and every Friday night at 9PM on Viva Radio<\/strong><\/a>. The tune I bring you today is yet another great example of one of those singers that came from jazz roots, but was able (like Della Reese, Marlena Shaw, Amanda Ambrose<\/strong> and many more) to work successfully in a soul\/funk style.<\/p>\n

The singer of today\u2019s selection is the late, great Irene Reid.<\/strong><\/p>\n

I first encountered Reid via her funky, late 60s recording of \u2018Dirty Old Man\u2019 and only became aware of her jazz background \u2013 albums for MGM and Verve \u2013 long after I started dropping that 45 in funk sets.<\/p>\n

I picked up the album you see before you today (1971\u2019s \u2018The World Needs What I Need\u2019) a few years back while digging in Philly, picking it up on the strength of Reid\u2019s voice, but also because of the presence of a couple of interesting cover versions.<\/p>\n

Reid\u2019s big, brassy take on Dusty Springfield\u2019<\/strong>s \u2018Son of a Preacher Man\u2019 is a great vehicle for Reid\u2019s sharp, powerful voice and the arrangement manages to be fairly funky, with the strings used sparingly enough that the guitar, bass and drums lead prominently.<\/p>\n

Reid continued to record her R&B-inflected jazz for a variety of labels into the early 2000s.<\/p>\n

She passed away in 2008.<\/p>\n
