Sugar Woman<\/em><\/strong><\/a><\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><strong><strong>Greetings all<\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Welcome to the middle of another groovy week.<\/p>\n<p>The track I bring you today is both a fairly recent discovery for me and a major fave.<\/p>\n<p>It is also something of a mystery.<\/p>\n<p>A few months back I was perusing a new (to me) record site on the intertubes, and a glimpse of the Pala records label caught my eye.<\/p>\n<p>One half of the York-Pala construct, it was run by two cats named <strong>Charlie Greene<\/strong> and<strong> Brian Stone.<\/strong> These operators are best known as music managers who came to prominence in mid-60s LA working with acts like <strong>Sonny and Cher, the Buffalo Springfield, the Poor<\/strong> and a cat you may have heard of named <strong>Dr John.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I had always seen the York\/Pala credit on many records, but it was only in the last few years that I actually found a record on either label.<\/p>\n<p>I have two 45s by The Poor (LA-based folk rock) but the<strong> Chitlins<\/strong> \u2018Sugar Woman\u2019 was the first Pala disc I\u2019d ever encountered.<\/p>\n<p>The label appears to have been very short-lived, with only one other release (by <strong>Larry Marks<\/strong>).<\/p>\n<p>The Chitlins appear to have gotten their start \u2013 and spent much of their existence \u2013 as a white show band called the <strong>Soul Brothers<\/strong>, in Pascagoula, Mississippi.<\/p>\n<p>The first time I heard \u2018Sugar Woman\u2019, what grabbed me was the New Orleans guitar (sounds like <strong>George Davis<\/strong> to me).<\/p>\n<p>As it turns out the band did in fact record their sole 45 in New Orleans for <strong>Stanley Chaisson\u2019s<\/strong> Chase Records imprint.<\/p>\n<p>I have not been able to confirm whether or not there was actually a Chitlins 45 released on Chase, or if it was a production deal that was licensed to Pala.<\/p>\n<p>My suspicion \u2013 without any hard evidence, mind you \u2013 is that Green and Stone happened upon the Chitlins via one of the many New Orleans connections in their orbit.<strong> Harold Battiste<\/strong> was Sonny and Cher\u2019s musical director, and both <strong>Mac \u2018Dr John\u2019 Rebennack<\/strong> and <strong>Alvin Robinson<\/strong> were both working on the West Coast during this period.<\/p>\n<p>That said, \u2018Sugar Woman\u2019 is a positively scorching bit of garagey soul with fantastic lyrics like<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Let her know she\u2019s a real Jim Dandy, feed her candy!<\/em><br \/>\n<\/strong><br \/>\nAnd<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Let her know she\u2019s a ring-dang-doo sir, don\u2019t lose her!<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>The guitar, bass and drums are in a deep, deep groove, and the horns and backing vocalists are spot on.<\/p>\n<p>I don\u2019t know who the lead vocalist is but he\u2019s killing it!<\/p>\n<p>Via some cross-referencing (and following a few hunches) I\u2019m led to believe that the band included guys named <strong>Chris Miller, Sam Roe, Pete Killingsworth, Sonny Tanner<\/strong>, having had some crossover with a group called the <strong>New Grooves<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>As I mentioned earlier, I hear the distinct guitar stylings of George Davis, but the entire record has such a New Orleans feel to it, I wouldn\u2019t be surprised to discover that this was the Soul Brothers\/Chitlins singer fronting an entire studio full of NOLA pros.<\/p>\n<p>In another interesting twist, the song is credited to country songwriter\/producer <strong>Billy Sherrill,<\/strong> but I can&#8217;t find any instance of anyone else having recorded the tune.<\/p>\n<p>The flip side, \u2018The Next Time You See Me\u2019 is an upbeat, bluesy shuffle.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSugar Woman\u2019 was a local Top 40 hit in New Orleans in the Spring of 1967.<\/p>\n<p>It is a truly remarkable tune, and one that I wish I\u2019d had in my crates a long time ago.<\/p>\n<p>I hope you dig it as much as I do, and I\u2019ll see you all on Friday.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Keep the faith<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><strong><strong>Larry<\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><strong><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Example\" src=\"https:\/\/helium.lunarpages.com\/%7Efunky4\/pictures\/new_funky16_logo.jpg\" width=\"179\" height=\"181\" \/><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>___________________________________________________________________________________________<\/p>\n<p><strong>Also, the brand new Funky16Corners &#8216;Keep Calm and Stay Funky&#8217;
