Greetings all<\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n

It is time once again to remind you to turn the knobs on your wireless sets this Friday night at 9pm so as to pick up the signal of the Funky16Corners Radio Show<\/strong>. Each and every Friday the good folks at Viva Radio<\/strong> <\/a>allow me to bring you an hour of the finest in funk, soul, jazz and rare groove, all from original vinyl. If you can\u2019t be there at airtime, you can always subscribe to the show as a podcast in iTunes, or grab an MP3 out of the archive here at the blog.<\/p>\n

The track we\u2019re going to close out the week with is a banger, and something of a mystery.<\/p>\n

I happened upon the Quovans<\/strong> \u2018Boogaloo Pts 1&2\u2019 whilst doing a search for \u2013 surprise\u2026 – \u201cboogaloo\u201d, and while the end result is not in any way Latin, the sounds are surely soulful and very groovy indeed.<\/p>\n

I have not been able to find out anything about the Quovans themselves, nor the root of their name, but there is some circumstantial evidence we can peruse.<\/p>\n

\u2018Boogaloo Pts 1&2\u2019 came out on Juggy Murray\u2019s<\/strong> NY-based Symbol label \u2013 also home to Inez and Charlie Foxx<\/strong> and the Poets<\/strong> \u2013 in 1966.<\/p>\n

The record appears to have come out (first?) on another NY label, Big City.<\/p>\n

The Quovans recorded one other 45, backing a singer named Sherri Gibbs<\/strong> on the song \u2018Oh My Baby\u2019 on the Philly Sound\u2019s (extraneous apostrophe and all).<\/p>\n

The connecting link is songwriter\/producer Clarence Hunter<\/strong>, who appears to have been Philadelphia-based, working with Gibbs, the Fabulous Performers<\/strong> (on Blackjack) and Bobby Joy<\/strong> (on Sentry).<\/p>\n

Whether or not the Quovans were also a Philly act, I cannot say.<\/p>\n

\u2018Boogaloo Pts 1&2\u2019 is a soul stomper, with organ, sax and some great harmonies by the Quovans. I\u2019m still on the fence as to whether I dig the overdubbed screams on the record, but they don\u2019t take away from the overall power of the disc.<\/p>\n

Part 2 opens with a cool spoken passage, then gets right back into gear.<\/p>\n

It is a very groovy record indeed, and I hope you dig it.<\/p>\n
