Greetings all<\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n

Here we stand, astride the week, Monday in the rear view mirror, Friday but a dream, but then, what\u2019s the matter with Wednesday that can\u2019t be fixed with some groovy music?<\/p>\n

Some of you \u2013 particularly the organ hounds amongst you \u2013 will already be familiar with the sounds of the TKOs.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The group, which included, sometimes with top billing, piano\/organ wrangler Hank Jacobs,<\/strong> recorded a grip of 45s for the Ten Star and Call Me labels in the mid-60s.<\/p>\n

Both labels were sunsidiaries of Money Records (Don Julian and the Larks<\/strong>, Bettye Swan<\/strong>) operating out of Los Angeles.<\/p>\n

The label got its start in the 1950s, went temporarily dormant in 1957 and then opened its doors for business once again in 1964.<\/p>\n

Though I can\u2019t give you a line-up for the TKOs \u2013 who had a Top 20 R&B hit with \u2018The Fat Man\u2019 in 1966 \u2013 it would seem that Hank Jacobs, who did a fair amount of studio work for Money\/Ten Star was a constant.<\/p>\n

Jacobs, who is known to Northern Soul fans for \u2018Elijah Rockin\u2019 With Soul\u2019 was as adept on the piano as he was on the organ, often working both on his records.<\/p>\n

Jacobs \u2013 who gets featured billing on the flipside \u2018The Charge\u2019 \u2013 works the piano in an R&B groove, anchoring \u2018Can You Dig It\u2019 even when the guitarist starts to take off into garage punk territory.<\/p>\n

If you get the chance, pick up some of Hank Jacobs recordings for the Sue label, like \u2018Monkey Hips and Rice\u2019 and \u2018So Far Away\u2019, which are all excellent.<\/p>\n
