The weekend is rapidly approaching, which means that it\u2019s almost Funky16Corners Radio Show<\/strong> time again. I com to you each and every Friday night at 9PM on Viva Radio<\/strong><\/a>, with the best in funk, soul, jazz and rare groove, all on original vinyl. The record I bring you today is something that has been simmering in the crates for a long time.<\/p>\n

I got my hands on \u2018I Need Your Love\u2019 by Tim<\/strong> (yes, just Tim\u2026) way back in that multi-thousand record dump, courtesy of my father-in-law.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s one of those records that had to grow on me for a while before I really \u201cgot\u201d it.<\/p>\n

\u2018I Need Your Love\u2019 has kind of a slow (dare I say, awkward) intro, but things get going pretty quickly, and build up a very nice head of steam.<\/p>\n

The piano pushes the rhythm along, and if you slap on the heaphones and listen closely, the guitar is doing some interesting things.<\/p>\n

I can tell you absolutely nothing about Tim himself, other than his last name would appear to be Smith<\/strong>, his voice sounds like a smoothed out Wilson Pickett<\/strong>, and that this is a Chicago 45.<\/p>\n

Celtex was a label owned by Bill Lasley,<\/strong> which as far as I can tell only issued a few 45s in it\u2019s short (just 1967?) existence, two by bluesman Mighty Joe Young<\/strong> and this 45 by Tim.<\/p>\n

The song\u2019s co-writer Vernon Taplin<\/strong> is better known by his stage name \u2018Saxie Russell\u2019<\/strong>, the man behind \u2018Psychedelic Soul\u2019 on Chicago\u2019s Thomas label.<\/p>\n
