Greetings all<\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n

The new week is here, so I thought I\u2019d dust off some of that good Chicago (via St Louis) instrumental soul to get you greased up and ready to roll.<\/p>\n

Alvin Cash<\/strong> (nee Weeks<\/strong>) and the Crawlers\/Registers<\/strong> had a string of hits for the Chicago labels Mar-V-Lus and Toddlin\u2019 Town between 1965 and 1968.<\/p>\n

Cash and his brothers \u2013 basically a dance act \u2013 emigrated to Chitown from St Louis and hit the charts early in 1965 with \u2018Twin Time\u2019.<\/p>\n

Backed by the Registers, originally a St Louis band called the Nightlighters<\/strong>, Cash basically worked the same side of the \u201cvocal\u201d street as Jerry-O<\/strong>, i.e. he was more of an emcee\/toaster\/proto-rapper than a singer proper, spicing up several groovy instrumentals with largely spoken interjections.<\/p>\n

The track I bring you today is \u2013 as my pockets often are<\/em> \u2013 Cash-less, featuring the Registers, along with a bottle of pop, getting down.<\/p>\n

The tune \u2013 \u2018No Deposit No Return\u2019 is credited to Joseph Delponto<\/strong> and Larry Nestor<\/strong>. I can\u2019t find anything about Delponto, but Nestor was a Chicago-area keyboardist who had spent some time in the Buckinghams,<\/strong> and wrote and arranged for other Chicago artists like the Sharpees<\/strong> and Syl Johnson.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u2018No Deposit No Return\u2019, which opens with the sound of a bottle being uncapped (natch\u2026) opens up into a grooving soul instro led by some soupy (Wurlitzer??) electric piano and saxophone, with enough punch for the dance floor.<\/p>\n

Though this song didn\u2019t chart, its flipside \u2018Philly Freeze\u2019 grazed the R&B Top 10 and the Pop Top 50 in 1966.<\/p>\n

It is a head-nodder indeed, and I hope you dig it.<\/p>\n
