{"id":4566,"date":"2014-02-04T13:01:05","date_gmt":"2014-02-04T18:01:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/funky16corners.com\/?p=4566"},"modified":"2014-02-04T13:01:05","modified_gmt":"2014-02-04T18:01:05","slug":"duke-williams-and-the-extremes-chinese-chicken","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/funky16corners.com\/?p=4566","title":{"rendered":"Duke Williams and the Extremes &#8211; Chinese Chicken"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Example\" src=\"https:\/\/funky16corners.com\/pictures\/dukewilliams_badge_pic.jpg\" width=\"600\" height=\"600\" \/> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Promo badge for Duke Williams and the Extremes<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Example\" src=\"https:\/\/funky16corners.com\/pictures\/dukewilliams_45.jpg\" width=\"600\" height=\"603\" \/><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/funky16corners.com\/sounds1\/funky16_current\/dukewilliams_chinesechicken.mp3\" target=\"_blank\"><strong><em>Listen\/Download Duke Williams and the Extremes &#8211; Chinese Chicken <\/em><\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong><strong><strong>Greetings all<\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The tune I bring you today is one of those 45s that \u2013 in a manner of speaking \u2013 unfolds like the petals of the storied lotus.<\/p>\n<p>I was familiar with <strong>Duke Williams and the Extremes&#8217;<\/strong> \u2018Chinese Chicken\u2019 as a breakbeat\/sample favorite from its inclusion on the \u2018Ultimate Breaks and Beats\u2019 series.<\/p>\n<p>When I finally got my hands on the 45, I assumed (remember what <strong>Felix Unger<\/strong> said about assuming?) that they were part of the Southern Rock scene, due to their presence on <strong>Phil Walden\u2019s<\/strong> Capricorn label, home to the <strong>Allman Brothers Band, Marshall Tucker Band, Wet Willie, Captain Beyond<\/strong> and others.<\/p>\n<p>It was only when I started digging for information that I discovered that Duke Williams and the Extremes were not Macon, GA homeboys of<strong> Gregg<\/strong> and <strong>Duane<\/strong>, but rather originated in that funky burgh, Trenton, NJ!<\/p>\n<p>Duke Williams (born <strong>Chris Holmes<\/strong>) had been a member of NJ garage faves the <strong>Galaxies IV<\/strong> (\u2018Let Me Hear You Say Yeah\u2019, \u2018Don\u2019t Lose Your Mind\u2019) back in the 60s, and had been working in and around Trenton and Philadelphia for years when he put together the Extremes.<\/p>\n<p>The group recorded two albums for Capricorn, \u2018A Monkey In a Silk Suit Is Still a Monkey\u2019 (1973) and \u2018Fantastic Fedora\u2019 (1974).<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Chinese Chicken\u2019 appeared on the first LP as well as being issued as a (now sought after) 45.<\/p>\n<p>The Extremes played a funk\/rock hybrid, mixing their originals with a fair amount of soul cover material (\u2018Funky Broadway\u2019, \u2018I\u2019ve Been Loving You Too Long (To Stop Now\u2019) with the group being joined in the studio by a who\u2019s who of Philly sessions heads.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Chinese Chicken\u2019 opens with a funky guitar before the band (with a wailing organ) drops in.
