Greetings all<\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n

I hope that the new week finds you all well.<\/p>\n

While I really dig gospel music \u2013 especially old school \u2013 I have never really been a collector of the sound.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s a genre that I don\u2019t know much about, so while I may dip my toe in every once in a while, I have yet to fully immerse myself.<\/p>\n

That said, even though their early recordings are firmly in the gospel tradition, I like to think of the mighty Staple Singers<\/strong> as sui generis.<\/em><\/p>\n

This has everything to do with the guitar of Roebuck \u2018Pop\u2019 Staples.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Listening to the group\u2019s pre-Stax recordings is like witnessing a mystical collision of the sacred and the profane, with Pop\u2019s Delta guitar lines winding in and out of the rich harmonies like an interloper.<\/p>\n

There are other instruments present (bass, drums) but they\u2019re marked by a plain-ness and subtlety that renders them practically invisible.<\/p>\n

Listening to Pop\u2019s guitar (with it\u2019s roots in the masters he heard as a young man, including Charlie Patton, Robert Johnson<\/strong> and Son House<\/strong>) amble through the songs it almost as if the ghosts of those roadhouse men are being chased down a dirt road by the holy spirit.<\/p>\n

The song I bring you today is an unusual one that has become a firm favorite of mine since I first heard it.<\/p>\n

\u2018Step Aside\u2019 \u2013 written by Pervis Staples<\/strong> \u2013 is an almost dirge-like number, with lyrics that cast the struggle for civil rights as a battle (the references to \u2018foreign soil\u2019 and \u2018foreign land\u2019 are particularly stark).<\/p>\n

The moments where Pop steps in with his high tenor to cry \u2018Step aside!\u2019 it sounds as if he\u2019s raising his hand and crying out from the amen corner.<\/p>\n

It is a remarkable piece of music, that like everything else they did during this period transcends both gospel and soul, turning into something else entirely.<\/p>\n

I hope you dig it, and I\u2019ll see you on Wednesday.<\/p>\n
