One of the great things that James Brown<\/strong> was responsible for (in addition to the one, true, superheavy funk<\/em>) was the rebirth of Hank Ballard\u2019s<\/strong> career.<\/p>\n

Ballard, an R&B pioneer who had a string of hits that stretched from 1953 (\u2018Get It\u2019 with the Royals<\/strong>) to 1961 (several classics as the leader of the Midnighters<\/strong>) was an major influence on JB.<\/p>\n

By the time he started recording with Brown in the late 60s, Ballard had been away from the charts for half a decade.<\/p>\n

Working with Brown, he had his comeback hit in 1968 with \u2018How you Gonna Get Respect (When You Haven\u2019t Cut Your Process Yet)\u2019 which made it into the R&B Top 20.<\/p>\n

He recorded a string of excellent 45s (and an LP) over the course of the next few years.<\/p>\n

Today\u2019s selection \u2018Blackenized\u2019 (written by Brown) was released in 1969.<\/p>\n

Like his previous hit, \u2018Blackenized\u2019 works the same black empowerment angle, with a funky band (dig that flute) and a great vocal\/recitation by Ballard.<\/p>\n

There are times where Hank crosses the line from the sublime into the ridiculous \u2013 such as his exhortation \u2018You don\u2019t have to be like an Oreo cookie, Brother. Black on the outside and white on the inside\u2019, but it\u2019s such a groovy track you kind of roll with it.<\/p>\n

The flip side \u2018Come On Wit It\u2019 (co-written by Ballard, Brown and Bud Hobgood<\/strong>) is a more conventional JB\/’69 funk outing.<\/p>\n
