{"id":4640,"date":"2014-03-11T11:04:50","date_gmt":"2014-03-11T16:04:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/funky16corners.com\/?p=4640"},"modified":"2014-03-11T11:04:50","modified_gmt":"2014-03-11T16:04:50","slug":"hank-ballard-blackenized","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/funky16corners.com\/?p=4640","title":{"rendered":"Hank Ballard &#8211; Blackenized"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Example\" src=\"https:\/\/funky16corners.com\/pictures\/hankballard_pic.jpg\" width=\"600\" height=\"760\" \/> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Hank Ballard<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Example\" src=\"https:\/\/funky16corners.com\/pictures\/hankballard_blackenized_45.jpg\" width=\"600\" height=\"605\" \/> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/funky16corners.com\/sounds1\/funky16_current\/hankballard_blackenized.mp3\" target=\"_blank\"><strong><em>Listen\/Download Hank Ballard &#8211; Blackenized <\/em><\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong><strong><strong>Greetings all<\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>One of the great things that <strong>James Brown<\/strong> was responsible for (<em>in addition to the one, true, superheavy funk<\/em>) was the rebirth of <strong>Hank Ballard\u2019s<\/strong> career.<\/p>\n<p>Ballard, an R&amp;B pioneer who had a string of hits that stretched from 1953 (\u2018Get It\u2019 with the <strong>Royals<\/strong>) to 1961 (several classics as the leader of the<strong> Midnighters<\/strong>) was an major influence on JB.<\/p>\n<p>By the time he started recording with Brown in the late 60s, Ballard had been away from the charts for half a decade.<\/p>\n<p>Working with Brown, he had his comeback hit in 1968 with \u2018How you Gonna Get Respect (When You Haven\u2019t Cut Your Process Yet)\u2019 which made it into the R&amp;B Top 20.<\/p>\n<p>He recorded a string of excellent 45s (and an LP) over the course of the next few years.<\/p>\n<p>Today\u2019s selection \u2018Blackenized\u2019 (written by Brown) was released in 1969.<\/p>\n<p>Like his previous hit, \u2018Blackenized\u2019 works the same black empowerment angle, with a funky band (dig that flute) and a great vocal\/recitation by Ballard.<\/p>\n<p>There are times where Hank crosses the line from the sublime into the ridiculous \u2013 such as his exhortation \u2018You don\u2019t have to be like an Oreo cookie, Brother.
