Greetings all<\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n

Welcome to the middle of the week.<\/p>\n

The tune I bring you today is a very funky number by some Volcanos<\/strong><\/a> in transition.<\/p>\n

At some point after they recorded their Harthon 45s (the one with the funky b-sides), and the departure of Gene Faith<\/strong> to go solo, but before they would emerge as the Trammps<\/strong>, the gentlemen of the Volcanos would record two (and a half) 45s as the Moods.<\/strong><\/p>\n

What information I have been able to find seems to place the 45s in question around 1970.<\/p>\n

The group released three 45s.<\/p>\n

The first – \u2018Rainmaker\u2019 b\/w \u2018Lady Rain\u2019 came out on Wand in 1970.<\/p>\n

The one you see before you today, \u2018King Hustler\u2019 b\/w \u2018Hustling\u2019 was released on the local Philly label (maybe one-off) Reddog that same year.<\/p>\n

The third \u2013 on Scepter – re-used \u2018King Hustler\u2019 on the a-side, placing it with a new flipside, \u2018With a Woman\u2019.<\/p>\n

\u2018King Hustler\u2019 is a great, hard-edged, Blaxploitation groover that is reminiscent of some of the heavier things the Temptations<\/strong> were laying down around the same time.<\/p>\n

The song \u2013 co-written by Sherman Marshall<\/strong> and Len Barry<\/strong> \u2013 features lyrics that reference Philadelphia\u2019s famous South Street, and going to see \u2018Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid\u2019 at the movies (!?).<\/p>\n

The group would reconvene as the Trammps two years later.<\/p>\n
