The tune I bring you today is an old favorite of mine.<\/p>\n

The name Lonnie Youngblood<\/strong> should be a very familiar one to fans of funk and soul.<\/p>\n

The vocalist\/saxophonist recorded some excellent 45s under his own name \u2013 while working as a backing musician for many soul and blues artists \u2013 during the 1960s.<\/p>\n

Some of these \u2013 in particular the 45s he recorded for Fairmount, \u2018Go Go Shoes\u2019 and \u2018Soul Food\u2019 \u2013 are, in addition to their own excellence, sweated by fans of the back up guitarist on the sessions, a certain\u00a0James Marshall Hendrix.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Today\u2019s selection, \u2018African Twist Pt1\u2019 was recorded for the Loma label in 1967. It was the first of Youngblood\u2019s two 45s for the label (the second being 1968\u2019s \u2018Roll With the Punches\u2019) and is a wild bit of funky soul.<\/p>\n

Layered with fake crowd noises, \u2018African Twist Pt1\u2019 features a crazed lead vocal by Youngblood, some excellent guitar and percussion and a wailing horn section.<\/p>\n

Youngblood went to to record several albums in the 1970s, and continues to perform today.<\/p>\n
