\nThe Funky16Corners 2014 Allnighter\/Pledge Drive arrives this Friday!
\nThis year is going to be an exceptional one, with a slight change in format. There are so many groovy mixes this year, instead of posting them all at once, I’ll be posting up a new mix every single day, starting this Friday 6\/6, with the final mix coming two weeks later on Friday 6\/20.
\nThis year will feature mixes by Tarik Thornton, DJ Prestige, M-Fasis, Tony C, Kris Holmes, DJ Prime Mundo, Fundefy, new selectors HeavySoulBrutha Dave B and Vincent the Soul Chef, and two new mixes by yours truly, Funky16Corners.
\nThere are some heavy, heavy mixes this year, which I think you’ll dig.

\nWelcome to the mid-week thing.<\/p>\n

I have to start this post by sending out thanks to my man Jeff Ash<\/strong> at the stellar \u2018AM Then FM\u2019<\/strong> blog, who was kind enough to pass this album onto me, replacing my own long-lost copy.<\/p>\n

The Esquires<\/strong> are best known to most soul fans for their 1967 hit \u2018Get On Up\u2019, which made it to R&B #3 and just grazed the Pop Top 10.<\/p>\n

Formed in Milwaukee, WI, the Esquires got their start in the late 1950s and their line-up evolved until settling in with Gilbert Moorer, Alvis Moorer, Sam Pace, and Shawn Taylor.<\/strong><\/p>\n

When I got my hands on their album, I started needle-dropping to see what LP cuts I had missed the first time around, and was blown away by the cut \u2018Things Won\u2019t Be the Same\u2019.<\/p>\n

A fantastic piece of mid-tempo harmony, \u2018Things Won\u2019t Be The Same\u2019 is one of those records that probably should have been released as a single.<\/p>\n

The really interesting this is, it was<\/em>, but not by the Esquires.<\/p>\n

As it turns out, the original release of \u2018Things Won\u2019t Be the Same\u2019 was in 1965, on Chicago\u2019s storied Constellation label by singer Mill Evans (Millard Edwards)<\/strong>, produced by the Esquires mentor, Bill \u2018Bunky\u2019 Sheppard.<\/strong><\/p>\n

At some point, Evans was absorbed into the Esquires (he sings bass on \u2018Get On Up\u2019), and his original recording of \u2018Things Won\u2019t Be the Same\u2019 was included on the \u2018Get On Up and Get Away\u2019 album!<\/p>\n

For some reason (no doubt financial) the writing credits on the 45 and the LP are different (see Keith Rylatt\u2019s<\/strong> excellent post about the record at his Groovesville, USA blog (companion piece to his indispensable book of the same name).<\/a><\/p>\n

The Esquires went on to have a string of hits going on into the mid-70s.<\/p>\n
