Greetings all<\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n

Here we all are, knee-deep in the middle of the week.<\/p>\n

What better, then, than some refreshing, upbeat Chicago soul?<\/p>\n

Darrow Fletcher\u2019s<\/strong> debut 45, 1966\u2019s \u2018The Pain Gets a Little Deeper\u2019 is one of those records that I chased after for quite a while before I finally landed one for my play box.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s not a crazy expensive 45, but it is popular and in demand, so you kind of have to fight a little bit to put your hands on one.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s also quite good.<\/p>\n

Recorded when Fletcher was 14 years old (?!?), and co-written by the singer, \u2018The Pain Gets a Little Deeper\u2019 is a snappy bit of dance floor soul, with a superb, raspy vocal and a very tasty horn arrangement.<\/p>\n

The record was produced by Fletcher\u2019s stepfather Johnny Haygood<\/strong>, and grazed the R&B Top 20 in January of 1966.<\/p>\n

Fletcher recorded 18 singles between 1966 and 1978 for labels like Groovy, Jacklyn, Revue, Congress, UNI and ATCO.<\/p>\n

He had two more minor R&B hits in 1970, and 1976, but never got any higher than his debut despite the consistent high quality of his material.<\/p>\n

There\u2019s a great Kent comp of his 1966-1971 records called \u2018The Pain Gets a Little Deeper\u2019 which can be had on CD or through iTunes.<\/p>\n
