It\u2019s ony fair to warn you, that as soon as you download today\u2019s selection and pull the trigger, your ears are gonna jump up off of your head and do the double bump.<\/p>\n

\u2018Sally Had a Party\u2019 by Flavor<\/strong>, is one of the finest examples of what collector types might call \u2018bubblegum soul\u2019, i.e. all the trappings of a soul party number strained through the filter of a loud, somewhat cheesy (in only the finest sense) pop\/rock band.<\/p>\n

Previous examples would include burners like \u2018Shake\u2019 by the Shadows of Knight<\/strong> (a 45 that I have spun at soul parties many a time), in which you get the soul-a-go-go<\/em> thing with a little extra fuzz and amplification around the edges.<\/p>\n

Flavor was a Maryland-based band that started out as the Bad Boys,<\/strong> a group that recorded some excellent 45s for Paula, including \u2018Black Olives\u2019 (see Funky16Corners Radio v.9).<\/p>\n

\u2018Sally Had a Party\u2019 is a positively explosive record, in which Flavor take the Spencer Davis Group\u2019s<\/strong> \u2018Gimme Some Lovin\u2019, strip it down to its borrowed frame (see \u2018A Lot of Love\u2019 by Homer Banks<\/strong>) and then strap on a case or two of dynamite, a couple of go go dancers, and a bunch of day-glo paint, and then light the fuse.<\/p>\n

Kaboom.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Seriously. Turn up the volume and drop the needle on this one in a room full of good-to-go party people and watch them blow the fuck up.<\/p>\n

In addition to all that goodness, you get a quote from the Fantastic Johnny C’s<\/strong> ‘Boogaloo Down Broadway’, too.<\/p>\n

\u2018Sally Had a Party\u2019 was a regional Top 40 hit in the summer of 1968 (the cover of \u2018Shop Around\u2019 on the flip is pretty cool, too) , after which Flavor glanced the charts a few more times and then disappeared.<\/p>\n

The band\u2019s guitarist, Demetri Callas<\/strong> later went on to tour with the Four Seasons.<\/strong><\/p>\n

There\u2019s a compilation on Collectables which includes the tracks from their three 45s and a grip of previously unreleased material.<\/p>\n

Dig it, and I\u2019ll be back on Wednesday.<\/p>\n
