Greetings all.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The new week is upons us, and I thought we\u2019d get things started with something hot.<\/p>\n

A few years ago I was out digging at a local fall-back spot (I say fall-back because although it is a record store, it rarely has anything good, but sometimes you just gotta get your dig on) and I happened upon a slightly beat, quite old (at least as old as I am) King Curtis<\/strong> album.<\/p>\n

King Curtis was one of the most important soul players of the 1960s, as a bandleader, and as one of the most prolific sidemen in the Atlantic studios.<\/p>\n

His albums \u2013 especially the Atlantic stuff \u2013 are plentiful and usually inexpensive, and always worth picking up when you find them.<\/p>\n

The album in question predated his own signing with Atlantic (though he had already been all over the Coasters<\/strong> Atco 45s), and was recorded for Bobby Robinson\u2019s<\/strong> Enjoy label in 1962.<\/p>\n

Recorded with the Noble Knights<\/strong> (then composed of Ernie Hayes<\/strong> (organ), Billy Butler<\/strong> (guitar), Jimmy Lewis<\/strong> (bass) and Ray Lucas<\/strong> (drums), the LP is composed of instrumentals, with five of its eleven tracks featuring \u2018Twist\u2019 in the title.<\/p>\n

Unlike a lot of twist cash-in sets, King Curtis had a shit-hot band, displayed to great effect on today\u2019s selection, a cover of Ray Charles\u2019<\/strong> classic \u2018What\u2019d I Say\u2019.<\/p>\n

Led by Billy Butler\u2019s guitar, the band sets off at top speed, tearing into the tune.<\/p>\n

Oddly enough, as far as I can tell, King Curtis himself does not appear on this track at all.<\/p>\n

The title track of the LP, \u2018Soul Twist\u2019 was a #1 R&B hit in 1962.<\/p>\n

These sessions \u2013 which also include a stellar version of \u2018Sack\u2019o\u2019Woe\u2019 \u2013 have been reissued on CD.<\/p>\n
