Greetings all.<\/strong><\/p>\n

I\u2019ve been cold and tired of late, so I thought it wise to light a fire under this week\u2019s figurative ass, and what better way to do that than with a tasty slice of breakbeat funk.<\/p>\n

\u2018Shack Up\u2019 by Banbarra<\/strong> is one of those records that I knew of \u2013 as a breakbeat source<\/a> \u2013 long before I ever heard (or owned) it.<\/p>\n

Not only was it sampled heavily, but it also had a second (third?) life of sorts when it was covered by the UK post punk band A Certain Ratio in 1980.<\/a><\/p>\n

The thing that I found odd is that when I started to look for information on the band and the record, I found almost nothing.<\/p>\n

The facts as they stand are, Banbarra was a Washington, DC based act featuring Moe Daniels<\/strong> and Joseph Anthony Carter<\/strong>. They recorded \u2018Shack Up\u2019 in 1975, and though it didn\u2019t hit the Pop or R&B charts, it was popular on disco dancefloors in both the US and the UK (it shows up on Billboard\u2019s disco charts for 1976).<\/p>\n

Bearing both a very 1970s message of \u201cwe don\u2019t need a piece of paper to prove our love\u201d, and one of the tastiest, swingingest breakbeats ever, \u2018Shack Up\u2019 really ought to have been a hit.<\/p>\n

Unfortunately, as good as \u2018Shack Up\u2019 is, Banbarra never made another record.<\/p>\n

That, as they say, is a drag.<\/p>\n

So dig the funk (and that break), and I\u2019ll see you all on Wednesday.<\/p>\n
