Greetings all.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The middle of the week is here, and so (almost) is Christmas.<\/p>\n

Today\u2019s selection is a record that I\u2019d heard of before, but only put my hands on a copy earlier this year.<\/p>\n

\u2018Christmas in Viet Nam\u2019 by Johnny & Jon<\/strong> was released at the height of the war in 1966.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s a slow moving bit of deep soul, with great trade-off lead vocals, pulsing bass, dirge-like organ and cool guitar.<\/p>\n

Johnny & Jon were John Wilson<\/strong> and John Wessler<\/strong>, and per the always reliable Sir Shambling<\/strong><\/a>, they only ever laid down this one 45.<\/p>\n

There were a grip of Vietnam War-related soul records, including \u2018The Lonely Soldier\u2019 by Mike Williams<\/strong>, \u2018A Soldier\u2019s Prayer\u2019 by Archie Bell and the Drells<\/strong>, and \u2018Marching Off to War\u2019 by William Bell<\/strong> among many others.<\/p>\n

There were actually (at least) two other records called \u2018Christmas in Viet Nam\u2019,one by Private Charles Bowens<\/strong> (on Rojac) and another by the Soul Searchers<\/strong> (probably a gospel outfit, not the DC group, on the Peacock subsidiary Song Bird).<\/p>\n

The subject matter is a little grim, but it\u2019s a great song, and a stark reminder that with every war, families are separated, and that we ought to think of those that can\u2019t be with their loved ones at this time of year.<\/p>\n

So dig the tune, have yourself a Merry Christmas (if you celebrate).<\/p>\n
