Greetings all.<\/strong><\/p>\n

We are in the grips of the winter\u2019s cold, so I thought I\u2019d whip out some nice, warm soul balladry for you.<\/p>\n

Gloria Jones<\/strong> is \u2013 of course \u2013 well known to soulies as the singer that made \u2018Tainted Love\u2019 a classic, but she has a deep discography.<\/p>\n

I grab her 45s whenever I find them, and today\u2019s selection was a very nice surprise indeed.<\/p>\n

As soon as I dropped the needle on \u2018When He Touches Me\u2019 I knew it sounded familiar, and about halfway into the song I realized that I already knew the song via a version by the great Rodge Martin.<\/strong><\/p>\n

As it turns out, the song \u2013 written by Carolyn Varga<\/strong> \u2013 was recorded a number of times by several great singers, including Percy Sledge, Jackie Edwards, Lulu, Mighty Sam<\/strong> and Peaches and Herb.<\/strong><\/p>\n

I haven\u2019t been able to track down any info on Varga (aside from a few, more obscure songs) but I think it\u2019s likely the original recording was by Percy Sledge<\/strong> (though Martin\u2019s version came out the same year).<\/p>\n

The Gloria Jones version of \u2018When He Touches Me\u2019 is a revelation.<\/p>\n

Recorded in 1968, produced by Dallas Smith<\/strong> and arranged by Artie Butler,<\/strong> \u2018When He Touches Me\u2019 has a Southern soul feel, and an epic vocal performance by Jones. She really stretches out, moving from soft, sultry depth into stratospheric soul shouting, backed by some very nice guitar and backing vocals (the Blossoms<\/strong>??).<\/p>\n

The end result is one of the finest female soul vocals I\u2019ve ever heard, from a singer who should have had the opportunity to record more than she did.<\/p>\n

Great stuff.<\/p>\n
