How about something tasty from the James Brown<\/strong> galaxy of stars to get you over the hump?<\/p>\n

I am continually surprised by the amount of James Brown and related records that I don\u2019t know, and I grab pretty much whetever I find in the field on King, I-Dentify, BrownStone, People or Polydor with any of the JB-signifiers (often enough, his smiling face right there on the label).<\/p>\n

Such was the case when I found myself a copy of the 45 you see before you, Vicki Anderson’s<\/strong> 1971\u00a0\u2018I\u2019m Too Tough For Mister Big Stuff (Hot Pants)’.<\/p>\n

Here we have a 45 of value to record collector types as an \u2018answer\u2019 record (as part of the Jean Knight<\/strong>-originated \u2018Big Stuff\u2019 continuum, not to mention the parenthetical “hot pants” tacked on at the end), and to funk 45 heads for the Vicki Anderson content, since she hardly lent her pipes to anything that wasn\u2019t a stone gas.<\/p>\n

The tempo is relaxed \u2013 as these things go \u2013 yet still packs a punch. Written by one of James Brown\u2019s guitar slingers, Hearlon \u2018Cheese\u2019 Martin<\/strong>, the song has a kind of odd rhythmic push, especially in regard to the way Anderson delivers the lyric.<\/p>\n

You get to hear how \u2018James Brown is down and Wilson Pickett is wicked\u2019,<\/em> as well as how \u2018the cats in Watts are cool if you aren\u2019t a fool\u2019<\/em>, and Vicki, one of the most powerful voices in Brown\u2019s orbit, is on point.<\/p>\n

The flipside, \u2018Sounds Funky\u2019 (written by Clarence Reid<\/strong> and Willie Clarke<\/strong>) is a rocked up instrumental with some heavy guitar and piano.<\/p>\n

I hope you dig the song, and I\u2019ll see you all on Friday.<\/p>\n
