The tune I bring you today is one that was hiding in plain sight in my record room for years, before it finally found it\u2019s way into my ears (and onto the blog).<\/p>\n

Tyrone Davis<\/strong> is best know for a two-decade long string of R&B hits, that began in 1968 with \u2018Can I Change My Mind\u2019.<\/p>\n

I picked up a copy of that very album severeal years back, and dug it right away.<\/p>\n

It contained a couple of hits, a couple of contemporary covers and some originals.<\/p>\n

Among those covers was a version of Eddie Floyd\u2019s<\/strong> 1966 R&B #1 \u2018Knock On Wood\u2019.<\/p>\n

I suspect that my missing it the first time around had everything to do with the fact that Davis\u2019s version is a radical reworking of the tune, taking an upbeat soul dancer and turning it (very nicely indeed) into a pleading ballad.<\/p>\n

I rediscovered the tune about a month ago when I pulled the album out for a spin, and didn\u2019t recognize the song right away.<\/p>\n

The re-imagining of the song is so thorough and so convincing that you almost have to put the original out of your head to dig it.<\/p>\n

Davis does a fantastic job with the song (I\u2019d love to know who\u2019s playing the guitar, which is excellent), and it really ought to be better known.<\/p>\n
