Greetings all.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The name Dorothy Morrison<\/strong> ought to be familiar to longtime readers of the blog, as she has been featured here twice before, with her groovy cover of \u2018Spirit In the Sky\u2019 and her Loft<\/strong> classic \u2018Rain\u2019.<\/p>\n

Morrison, who got her start in gospel, working with the California State Youth Choir<\/strong> and then the Edwin Hawkins Singers<\/strong> (that\u2019s her on \u2018Oh Happy Day\u2019)<\/a>, eventually appearing in the 1969 film \u2018Celebration at Big Sur\u2019 (Dorothy Combs Morrison and the Combs Sisters<\/strong>, singing her first secular single \u2018All Gods Children Got Soul\u2019).<\/a><\/p>\n

Morrison had a relatively brief career in the soul realm, running from 1969 to 1972 (with one last, rare 45 for the Brown Door label in 1975), but the records she did lay down are all excellent.<\/p>\n

The record I bring you today is her 1972 version of Marvin Gaye\u2019s<\/strong> \u2018Ain\u2019t That Peculiar\u2019 (with a cover of Jackie Wilson\u2019s<\/strong> \u2018Higher and Higher\u2019 on the flip).<\/p>\n

Morrison had a deep, sultry voice with a remarkable amount of control, and it is displayed to great effect on \u2018Ain\u2019t That Peculiar\u2019.<\/p>\n

The arrangement starts out smooth, but builds up a nice head of steam, especially when the percussion and flute come in midway through.<\/p>\n

The flipside, \u2018Higher and Higher\u2019 gets off to a very heavy start, indeed, before settling into a nice groove, which is refreshing when you consider what Rita Coolidge<\/strong> did to the song a few years later.<\/p>\n

Oddly, despite the high quality of her records, Morrison was met with almost complete commercial indifference (aside from \u2018Rain\u2019 becoming something of an underground dance classic).<\/p>\n

After her Brown Door 45 (co-produced by labelmate and fellow Oakland-ite Marvin Holmes<\/strong>), Morrison returned to gospel.<\/p>\n
