Greetings all.<\/strong><\/p>\n

I thought we\u2019d get over the hump this week with some of that Hammond organ goodness bubbling up from my crates.<\/p>\n

Brother Jack McDuff<\/strong> is one of the true greats of the classic era of soul jazz Hammond (mid-50s to early 70s). He is joined on today\u2019s selection by legendary reedman David \u2018Fathead\u2019 Newman<\/strong>, with whom he recorded the 1968 LP \u2018Double Barrelled Soul\u2019.<\/p>\n

Their version of JJ Jackson\u2019s<\/strong> 1966 hit \u2018But It\u2019s Alright\u2019 is \u2013 if not a complete deconstruction \u2013 a slightly avant garde approach to a familiar soul hit, with just enough edge to catch your ear, but not so much as to leave you shaking your head.<\/p>\n

Opening with an odd organ fillagree, the fray is soon joined by the horn section, laying down an unusual, Thelonious Monk<\/strong>-esque riff, over which Brother Jack solos with confidence.<\/p>\n

When the song starts out, it might take a new listener a second or two to wrap your ears around what\u2019s going on, but once you do, there\u2019s a funky drive shaft that keeps things moving forward.<\/p>\n

While I wouldn\u2019t go as far as to say that this enters Larry Young<\/strong> territory, there is some of that kind of thing at work here, which makes the record work as jazz, as well as a mod jazz groover.<\/p>\n

I like it a lot, and I hope you do too.<\/p>\n
