We\u2019re closing out the week with a record I found a few years back.<\/p>\n

Gary US Bonds<\/strong> ought to be familiar to most folks via his stellar early 60s R&B sides for LeGrand (like \u2018New Orleans\u2019 and \u2018Quarter to Three\u2019) or his 1980s resurrection as part of the Springsteen<\/strong> galaxy of stars.<\/p>\n

However, as this 45 demonstrates, Bonds made a stop at the short-lived, late 60s soul label Botanic for one, excellent 45.<\/p>\n

Bonds came out of the Tidewater area of Virginia, working for Frank Guida\u2019s<\/strong> LeGrand records.<\/p>\n

By the time he hooked up with fellow Virginian Jerry \u2018Swamp Dogg\u2019 Williams<\/strong> in 1968, his chart successes were in the distant past.<\/p>\n

Today\u2019s selection \u2018I\u2019m Glad You\u2019re Back\u2019 was co-written by Bonds (he\u2019s \u2018G. Anderson<\/strong>\u2019) and Williams, produced by Williams and arranged by Teacho Wiltshire.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Interestingly enough there were only three 45s released on Botanic (Bonds, Little Charles and the Sidewinders<\/strong>, and a rock band called Saturday\u2019s Crowd<\/strong>) and they were all co-written and produced by Williams.<\/p>\n

\u2018I\u2019m Glad You\u2019re Back\u2019 finds Bonds working in a funkier, more explicitly soulful 1968-appropriate sound. The arrangement is tight, making tasteful use of the string and horn sections, and whoever is playing the bass is off the hook.<\/p>\n

The record got some minor play in the New York market in the Fall of 1968, but that\u2019s about it.<\/p>\n

Bonds would keep recording for a variety of labels through the 70s, until he hit with \u2018This Little Girl\u2019 in 1981.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s a groovy 45, and I hope you dig it.<\/p>\n
