Greetings all.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The end of the week is upon us, so I simply must ask that you take an hour out of your Friday and tune in to the Funky16Corners Radio Show<\/strong>, Friday night at 9PM on Viva Radio<\/a><\/strong>. The record I bring you today is a fantastic slice of Philly R&B\/soul that I picked up wayyyyy back in the day, when I was grabbing everything I could with a Philly pedigree.<\/p>\n

And as pedigrees go, this one has a long one.<\/p>\n

Timmy and the Persianetts<\/strong> (sic) recorded two 45s for Olympia and Guyden in 1963 and 1964.<\/p>\n

Timmy, aka \u2018Timmy Carr\u2019<\/strong> was Timothy Carstaphen<\/strong>, and the Persianetts (later Persianettes<\/strong>) were Vera Carey, Lucille Dunbar and Helen Hutchinson.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Carr went on to record the epic (unreleased when recorded but issued years later) \u2018Got No Time\u2019, one of the most brilliant Philly soul tunes ever waxed, and the Persianettes recorded one of my favorite soul 45s, \u2018It Happens Every Day\u2019 b\/w \u2018Call On Me\u2019 for the OR label.<\/p>\n

That said, \u2018Timmy Boy\u2019 has been lauded previously as one of the finer bits of imitation Phil Spectoriana<\/em><\/strong> ever laid down, which it is, but it is also groovy on its own merits.<\/p>\n

Featuring a great lead vocal by Carr, and backing by the Persianetts on a tune based on the old folk song \u2018Darling Billy\u2019, the record builds, layer upon thundering layer until it ladles out that rich sonic soup with the Gold Star Studios sound.<\/p>\n

This isn\u2019t an easy record to find, but when you do (find it, that is) it isn\u2019t terribly expensive.<\/p>\n
