Greetings all.<\/strong><\/p>\n

How about some tasty funk to get us all through the middle of the week?<\/p>\n

I first happened upon Larry Foster\u2019s<\/strong> \u2018Funky Belly\u2019 after picking up Warren Lee\u2019s<\/strong> New Orleans-made, Meters<\/strong>-backed record of the same name from 1970.<\/p>\n

In fact, Foster\u2019s was the third \u2018Funky Belly\u2019 I added to my crates, following OD Williams<\/strong> song on the Bar-Bare label.<\/p>\n

Though I haven\u2019t ever found any specific information in this regard, the presence of three geographically close 45s with the same title around the same time, makes me think that there was in fact a dance called the \u201cfunky belly\u201d, and that funky people on the Gulf Coast of the USA (specifically Mississippi and Louisiana) were doing it.<\/p>\n

Foster\u2019s \u2018Funky Belly\u2019 features some funky bass, wah wah guitar and pumping combo organ, and a high-tenor vocal by Foster.<\/p>\n

Interestingly \u2013 and you should jet on over to my man Kris Holmes\u2019<\/strong> \u2018Greenville and Beyond\u2019<\/strong> <\/a>site \u2013 the Big Beat label was part of a Mississippi-to-Chicago connection covering blues, soul and funk.<\/p>\n

While my guess would be that Larry Foster was in fact working in the Miss\/LA area, and tapping into the \u2018Funky Belly\u2019 thing in the region, it would certainly be interesting if the dance craze (albeit on a very small scale) made its way up to Chitown.<\/p>\n

That said, it\u2019s a groovy little record, and I hope you dig it.<\/p>\n
