Greetings all.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The track I bring you today is a record that I was after for a long time, and as is often the case, it kept slipping from my grasp until recently.<\/p>\n

The rockers among you will likely be familiar with Bobby Keys<\/strong> as the sax player with the Rolling Stones<\/strong> and Joe Cocker\u2019s Mad Dogs and Englishmen<\/strong> (among many others).<\/p>\n

The Texas-born Keys was a prolific sideman and studio head (check out his Wiki for an idea of the depth of his discography<\/a>), and a frequent presence until his death last year at the age of 71.<\/p>\n

In 1975 keys went into the studio and recorded a one-off 45 for Ringo Starr\u2019s<\/strong> short-lived custom label, Ring\u2019O records.<\/p>\n

\u2018Gimme the Key\u2019 is a testament to the popularity and influence of the Average White Band\u2019s<\/strong> 1974 \u2018Pick Up the Pieces\u2019, to which this song is a not too distant cousin (keeping in mind that no less than James Brown<\/strong> felt the need to crank out an answer record with the JBs<\/strong> in disguise as the Above Average Black Band<\/strong>).<\/p>\n

The tune opens with funky guitar and clavinet, chants of \u2018Gimme the Key!\u2019 followed of course by Keys’ instantly recognizable tenor saxophone.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s slick \u2013 but not too slick<\/em> \u2013 funky, and danceable enough that one might suspect that it had its share of spins in the discotheques of the time.<\/p>\n

I dig it a lot, and I hope you do, too.<\/p>\n
