Greetings all.<\/strong><\/p>\n

We\u2019re going to get over the hump this\u00a0week with a groover, but first, a lesson in why you should always read labels, but then again, not too closely.<\/p>\n

\u2018Mr CC\u2019 by Jim Pipkins and the Boss Five<\/strong> had been on my radar for a long time before I finally scored myself a copy.<\/p>\n

It is a fast-moving, mod\/jazz dance floor heater, mostly instrumental, save for some shouts outs through the record.<\/p>\n

A brief glance at the label reveals that the record company, Emerge (also home to the Northern Soul rarity \u2018Every Time\u2019 by Anthony and the Delsonics<\/strong>) had themselves a St Louis, MO address.<\/p>\n

Now, St Louis has a long and rich R&B and soul tradition, so if you were to assume that Jim Pipkins and the Boss Five<\/strong> hailed from that great city, you would be forgiven.<\/p>\n

Unless that is, you have access to the interwebs and the Googles and such, use of which revealed in short order that the group was a Pacific Northwest conglomeration.<\/p>\n

Jim Pipkins<\/strong> had been in a Seattle group called the Gallahads,<\/strong> which evolved into the Boss Five.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Boss Five were managed by local DJ Chuck Cunningham,<\/strong> aka \u2018Mr CC<\/strong>\u2019, and released a couple of 45s, including \u2018Mr CC\u2019 in 1965 and \u2018Mister Clean \u201867\u2019 on the Norman label.<\/p>\n

Apparently Pipkins himself went on to work as a DJ on a number of West Coast stations.<\/p>\n

\u2018Mr CC\u2019 kicks off with a riff that sounds like a fast-moving version of \u2018Watermelon Man\u2019 with organ, horns and some groovy, jazzy guitar.<\/p>\n

The whole thing\u2019s over in less than two and a half minutes which is a shame because it is very groovy indeed.<\/p>\n
