Greetings all.<\/strong><\/p>\n

I have some groovy Christmas stuff for you this year – including a mix of favorites, dropping on Friday.
\n.
\nOne of this year’s offerings is particularly intriguing because it is a \u201ccover\u201d of sorts.<\/p>\n

If the medley of \u2018Silent Night\u2019 and a recording of a TV news broadcast sounds familiar (and it should) it\u2019s because Simon & Garfunkel<\/strong> did it in 1966 as \u2018Silent Night\/7 O\u2019Clock News\u2019 on their LP \u2018Parsley Sage Rosemary and Thyme\u2019.<\/p>\n

The juxtaposition of a revered\/traditional Christmas song, and a news broadcast marred by reports of war was a stark (if somewhat heavy handed) reminder of what was at stake in the middle of the 1960s.<\/p>\n

The following year, Atlanta-based producer Wendell Parker<\/strong>, who had worked with Eddie Billups, Grover Mitchell<\/strong> and the Mighty Hannibal<\/strong> (among others) assembled a gospel group called the Shurfine Singers<\/strong> (Parker had done a lot of work with the Atlanta-based Shurfine label) and released his own version of the medley, in a gospel style, (barely) re-titled \u2018Silent Night & the 11 O\u2019Clock News\u2019.<\/p>\n

No doubt an attempt to offer up the same message to a black audience, it is refreshing (and also somewhat jarring) to hear the familiar medley redone.<\/p>\n

As far as I can tell this version didn\u2019t chart anywhere, nor was it released locally on Shurfine (though Parker had placed a number of his productions with Josie).<\/p>\n

The flipside is a version of the spiritual \u2018Go Tell It On the Mountain\u2019.<\/p>\n

I hope you dig it, and I\u2019ll be back on Wednesday with something festive.<\/p>\n
