Greetings all.<\/strong><\/p>\n

I hope the middle of the week finds you well.<\/p>\n

The tune I bring you today is one of those groovy 45s that sought to surf the wave of a musical trend, in this case the tsunami of \u2018Horse\u2019 records in 1968 (see here<\/a>*) spawned by Cliff Nobles and Company<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The interesting thing is that the group in question, a studio assemblage called the \u2018Magistrates\u2019<\/strong> had already had a hit, earlier in 1968 doing (much more successfully) the same thing, except with the \u2018Here Comes the Judge\u2019 fad (which you can read all about in the old Funky16Corners web zine<\/a>).<\/p>\n

The Magistrates were two members of the Dovells<\/strong>, Jerry Gross<\/strong> (who also worked with a bunch of Philly acts as a songwriter, producer and arranger), Mike Freda<\/strong>, and a vocalist named Jeannie Yost<\/strong>, working under the name \u2018Jean Hillary\u2019.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u2018Here Comes the Judge\u2019 was a minor national hit in May of 1968, and a big single in Philadelphia.<\/p>\n

They followed it with \u2018After the Fox\u2019 ( a very thinly disguised attempt at a \u2018Horse\u2019 number) in August of that year, but only really got any play locally.<\/p>\n

The resulting number is a funky dancer, with a guitar line and bridge that get as close to Cliff Nobles as possible without being an outright rip, as well as a wailing vocal by Yost\/Hillary.<\/p>\n

There\u2019s enough meat on the record that it manages to transcend the \u2018novelty\u2019 label.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s a groovy one, and I hope you dig it.<\/p>\n
