Greetings all.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The end of the week is near, and so is the appearance of the latest episode of the Funky16Corners Radio Show<\/strong> podcast. Today\u2019s selection is the unusual (soulful) by-product of a string mid-1960s comedy-novelty 45s by a guy named Bill Minkin.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Minkin, along with an assembledge known as the Hardly-Worthit Players<\/strong> (the name being a play on then famous newsmen (Chet) Huntley and (David) Brinkley<\/strong>) released a version of the Troggs\u2019<\/strong> \u2018Wild Thing\u2019, as performed in the (impersonated) voice of Senator Bobby Kennedy<\/strong>. Though this is little-known to anyone that wasn\u2019t around to hear it the first time, it was a fairly substantial pop hit in the Winter of \u201866\/\u201967.<\/p>\n

As has always been the case, the parties involved decided to milk the success as much as they could, eventually releasing three 45s (and two LPs on Cameo\/Parkway called \u2018Boston Soul\u2019 and \u2018Senator Bobby\u2019s Christmas Party\u2019) between 1966 and 1968, with covers of Donovan\u2019s<\/strong> \u2018Mellow Yellow\u2019 and finally Mitch Ryder\u2019s<\/strong> \u2018Sock It To Me Baby\u2019.<\/p>\n

The tune I bring you today was the flip side of that final 45. Billed as \u2018Sock It To me Bobby\u2019 by the \u2018Bobby Sockers\u2019,<\/strong> what you get here is a straight cover of the Mitch Ryder tune, with the ridiculous Bobby Kennedy imitation stripped off, returning it to its roots as an upbeat dancer.<\/p>\n

The only downer (as it is) is the inclusion of a super-white-sounding female chorus running under things.<\/p>\n

That said, it\u2019s still a groovy record, which I included in one of my 2014 Pledge Drive mixes.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s a cool 45 (with a cool story) and I hope you dig it.<\/p>\n
