Greetings all.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The new week has arrived and I though I\u2019d whip a little of that high-class, uptempo soul in your direction.<\/p>\n

I forget where I first heard of Jackie Verdell<\/strong>, but for some reason I thought she was a Chicago-based singer.<\/p>\n

I couldn\u2019t have been more wrong.<\/p>\n

Verdell came out of Philadelphia, and before her 1960s career as a secular singer was a driving force in the world of gospel as a vocalist in the Davis Singers<\/strong>. So powerful was she, that the mighty Aretha Franklin<\/strong> singled her out for praise in her autobiography.<\/p>\n

She moved over into the world of R&B and soul in 1963 with Peacock Records, and during the 60s moved on to Decca and Coral imprints before returning to the gospel fold in the early 70s.<\/p>\n

Today\u2019s selection, \u2018Are You Ready For This\u2019 was her first 45 for Decca in 1967. Penned by writer\/producer Buddy Scott<\/strong> and singer Jimmy Radcliffe<\/strong> (he of the classic \u2018Long After Tonight Is All Over\u2019), produced by Joe Medlin<\/strong> and arranged by the great Bert De Coteaux<\/strong>, \u2018Are You Ready For This\u2019 features a great vocal by Verdell and a punchy, four on the floor beat. I really dig the interplay between the lead and rhythm guitars and the horn chart.<\/p>\n

Though the record didn\u2019t make the R&B charts, it did have some regional pop success in the Midwest and Los Angeles.<\/p>\n

The flipside, \u2018I\u2019m Your Girl\u2019, written by Verdell herself is a wonderful deep ballad with just a hint of a Southern soul sound to it.<\/p>\n

Following her return to gospel, she recorded for a few different labels into the early 80s, but unfortunately did not find success.<\/p>\n

Jackie Verdell passed away in 1991.<\/p>\n
