Greetings all.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The record I bring you today is an interesting combination of groovy sounds and an interesting back story.
\nA couple of years back someone on Facebook posted a clip of today\u2019s selection and I knew I had to go out and find myself a copy.<\/p>\n

The interesting thing is that \u2018Paul Nero\u2019<\/strong> doesn\u2019t exist, at least under that name. He is in actuality German saxophonist and arranger Klaus Doldinger,<\/strong> working under a pseudonym.<\/p>\n

Using the \u2018Paul Nero\u2019 name, Doldinger and a collection of prominent German musicians, including organist Ingfried Hoffman<\/strong> (aka Memphis Black<\/strong>) and guitarist Siegfried Schwab<\/strong> (who with Manfred Hubler<\/strong> went on to record a bunch of incredible exploitation soundtracks later compiled as Vampiros Lesbos Sexadelic Dance Party) and American expat guitarist Joe Quick<\/strong> (who recorded on the Memphis Black records).<\/p>\n

There were at least four albums released under the \u2018Paul Nero\u2019 name, all composed of covers of then popular hits, some focusing on soul, and some on pop\/rock.<\/p>\n

Today\u2019s selection (actually listed on the album as \u2018This Is Soul\/Soul Finger\/Soul Man\u2019) is from the 1968 \u2018Soul Party\u2019 album, which is composed entirely of similar medleys. ‘This Is Soul’ is an original composition and the other tunes were -of course – originally done by the Bar Kays<\/strong> and Sam & Dave<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The opening section \u2018This Is Soul\u2019 features someone (with a German accent) speaking the intro, after a sweet drum break (one of the reasons this album is sought after) and the members of the band joining in one by one, a la \u2018Memphis Soul Stew\u2019. The playing \u2013 across the entire album \u2013 is quite good, in the style of a UK\/Euro library LP.<\/p>\n

My only complaint is the medley format, since I\u2019d like to hear this band playing the entire songs.<\/p>\n

That said, I\u2019m going to be on the lookout for the rest of the albums (most of them were only released outside of the US).<\/p>\n
