Greetings all.<\/strong><\/p>\n

It\u2019s summer. We\u2019re all hot and sweaty. We sit stupefied, watching the droplets of humidity run down the outside of our beer, swatting flies away.<\/p>\n

What better time to strip the gears with something funky?<\/p>\n

If you\u2019re anywhere pre-middle age, it\u2019s unlikely that the name Pigmeat Markham<\/strong> will ring a bell.<\/p>\n

He was born near the beginning of the last century, and started in show business right around the end of World War One, but he managed to put his name \u2013 and his growl \u2013 on the 45 you see before you today, in 1968.<\/p>\n

Dewey \u2018Pigmeat\u2019 Markham<\/strong> was a comedian who got his start in the vaudeville era and was a very popular comedianon the chitlin circuit, plying his trade for almost exclusively black audiences for most of his career.<\/p>\n

It was only in 1968, when Sammy Davis Jr<\/strong> went on Laugh-In and worked it out to one of Markham\u2019s best known routines, \u2018Here Come the Judge!\u2019 that Pigmeat (momentarily) broke through to a much wider audience.<\/p>\n

As far as I can tell, Markham first recorded the routine in the early 60s for Chess, but had been doing it on stage for years.<\/p>\n

Sammy made the routine viral (by 1968 standards) and there was a veritable \u2018Judge\u2019 craze,<\/a> with a grip of records (funk, soul and pop), all kinds of ephemera, and last but not least, the resurgence of the career of Pigmeat Markham.<\/p>\n

Chess put some of their finest to work,and before you know it, ole Pig (64 years old!) was trampling the charts, his \u2018Here Comes the Judge\u2019 making it to the R&B Top 5, Pop Top 20 in the US and the UK!<\/p>\n

His follow up single (the record you see before you today) found him in the studio with Gene Barge,<\/strong> working it out on songs written by Maurice Dollison<\/strong> (aka Cash McCall<\/strong>), Maurice McCallister<\/strong> of the Radiants<\/strong>, and Barge.<\/p>\n

\u2018The Hip Judge\u2019 features grooving bass, tight drums, saxophone, and Pigmeat\u2019s \u2018singing\u2019. The extent of the singing isn\u2019t too far removed from your average Jerry-O<\/strong> record, reduced to comedic interjections and interaction with the backing singers.<\/p>\n

That said, the 45 is quite funky and an excellent entry into the \u2018Funky Judge\u2019 discography.<\/p>\n
